Why Uzbekistan?
As a major industry, agriculture is one of the priority areas of the economy. Uzbekistan is a favorable region for the production of various arable and industrial crops. According to the proportion of employment in the sectors of the economy, agriculture occupies a leading position. This sector provides the population with food and various industries with raw materials. 60% of the population lives in rural areas. A significant part of the population works in the agricultural sector. Agriculture accounts for 28% of the GDP. Most areas under crops, and almost all areas under industrial crops, are irrigated land, which is maintained by a powerful state irrigation system. Crop acreage for arable crops, in all categories of land, now amounts to over 4 million hectares. 87% of the total cultivated area is irrigated land.
The natural and climatic conditions of the area are very favorable for horticulture and viticulture. Over 700 farms currently operate in these areas. They have over 9000 hectares at their disposal. In the past year, these farms grew 50,000 tons of grapes and 15,000 tons of fruit.
In the Fergana Region, in accordance with the State Programme ‘Year of Rural Development and Improvement’, 34 poultry farms have been established, where 200,000 heads of poultry will be bred. In accordance with a Government decree, it is planned to build two livestock breeding plants (500 heads) for dairy production in the Jizzakh and Syrdarya regions.
The stockbreeding sector is exempt from all taxes on its principal activity, and mandatory deductions, until 2012. Businesses in this sector do not have to customs duties on importing the breeding material, technologies and equipment necessary for the development of veterinary services.
To date, about 13,000 livestock breeding farms, in which 511,300 heads of cattle are fattened up, have been established in the country. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Uzbekistan, of the more than 80,600 farms in the country, 10,000 specialise in livestock, vegetable and potato production, and over 22,000 in horticulture and viticulture
On 25 March, President Islam Karimov signed a decree to join the agreement on the establishment of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) of 13 June 1976. The organisation specialises in providing funds to developing countries on concessional terms for agricultural development aimed at increasing food production. In particular, the Fund provides interest-free soft loans for up to 50 years, including a 10-year grace period, with a service fee of 1%.
Uzbekistan has attracted about $700 million to the agricultural sector for infrastructural and institutional projects through loans and grants from international financial institutions - World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank.
